Works of Controversy: The Government of India vs. Wright

Apparently the Indian government is making all attempts to stop Wright's March 31st auction, and  to recover the Pierre Jeanneret furniture formerly from the city of Chandigarh.  In the 1950's the Chandigarh government commissioned Le Corbusier to design the city as a monument to modernity. Le Corbusier's cousin, Pierre Jeanneret, was hired to design the furniture.

By the 1980's the Chandigarth government considered the furniture as junk, and was sold to the public "for peanuts" at government auctions. Some of the furniture was purchased by a number of wise European 20th Century art dealers, restored, and then offered at auction houses worldwide. As a result, the market for Jeanneret furniture expanded significantly, and value grew dramatically (eg. the chair pictured above has been estimated at 15,000 - 20,000 USD).

The problem: now that the furniture is valuable, the Indian government is attempting to claim ownership of the pieces.

Spaces: The Home of Elin Kling + Gustaf Törlings: Stockholm

The home of fashion designer Elin Kling and creative director Gustaf Törlings.

"The style is some sort of bohemian chic," says Elin, "but we never really talked about what kind of furniture we have, it has become natural. I get much inspiration from fashion and home decor world."


Complimenting their decor are some fine pieces of mid-century modernism, including a set of Hans Wegner wishbone chairs, Aldo Tura nesting tables with vintage accessories by Hermes, and a Danish leather sofa inherited from Gustaf's grandmother.

They also share a great love story, read it at residence (though you may have to use Google Translate).

A fine Eero Saarinen executive chair for Knoll Associates.  Originally designed in 1957, this fluid and sculptural form is a descendant of earlier forms developed over a decade earlier, in collaboration with Charles Eames for MoMA's Organic Design in Home Furnishings competition.

Featuring a one-piece wide-arching and flexible fiberglass backrest, recalliing Saarinen's Gateway Arch in St. Louis.

Spaces: The home of Laura + Diego Garcia: New York

The beautiful home of fashion designer Laura and her husband singer songwriter Diego Garcia. A bright light space, infused with touches of 20th Century Modernist Glam, including chrome lounge chiars by Milo Baughman, a coffee table and leather stools by Karl Springer, and a sofa by George Nelson.  In the dining room is a classic arrangement of a George Nelson Bubble Lamp, Eero Saarinen dining table and Harry Bertoia wire chairs.   Spotted in the dressing room is a pair of Richard Prince skateboard decks for Supreme.
